What was the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) hard fork on November 15, 2020?

As there is no replay protection for this hard fork, sending out your BCH could result in a loss of BCHA funds.

The Bitcoin Cash (BCH) network underwent a network upgrade on November 15, 2020, which resulted in a hard fork due to disagreements among network participants. Some participants proposed increasing the block size limit to improve transaction speed, while others opposed this change due to concerns about increased storage costs for network nodes. As the participants couldn’t reach an agreement, this resulted in a hard fork.

This created different chains: BCH and BCHA. This is similar to BCH’s split initially from BTC and then again with the split of BCH and BSV.

There is now:

  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
  • The brand new: Bitcoin Cash ABC (BCHA), now rebranded eCash (XEC).

Can I safely use BCH in Exodus?

Yes. This is because Exodus still supports Bitcoin Cash (BCH).

But be careful!

While you can still send and receive BCH inside your Exodus wallet, remember that sending out your BCH will also send out your new (unsplit) forked BCHA coins too. This is because there is no replay protection.

You will need to find a wallet that supports both BCH and the new BCHA to split your funds for you.

We recommend that you don’t make any BCH transactions until you have split your BCHA from your BCH.

Does Exodus support BCHA or XEC?

No, Exodus doesn’t offer support for BCHA or XEC.

If you’d like to see the criteria we look for when adding support for new assets, check out this article.

How will I access my forked coins?

As your Exodus wallet is non-custodial, this means that whether or not Exodus decides to support the new forked coin will not matter.

To have access to your forked coins, all you will need is your BCH private key, which you can find following this guide. Once you have your BCH private key, it’s possible to import it into a wallet that supports Bitcoin Cash ABC (BCHA), or XEC.

You can find a list of wallets that are officially promoted by eCash, here: https://e.cash/wallets

Do your own research and verify the legitimacy of any wallet you decide to use. Scam wallets often target people trying to claim forked coins. If you import your private keys into a scam wallet, both your forked and original coins will be stolen! If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a wallet, don’t use it!

What is the Bitcoin Cash CashAddr (q address) format?

The “CashAddr” format was developed by the Bitcoin Cash team to encode addresses in a format to reduce user error when sending and receiving Bitcoin Cash. This new format helps distinguish between Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Bitcoin (BTC) addresses. It starts with a q.

How do I convert my Bitcoin Cash Address (q address) to Legacy Address?

Exodus supports the Bitcoin Cash q address format. If another service does not accept your Exodus Bitcoin Cash q address, you can convert it to a Legacy address. Your BCH will arrive at your Cash address even if sent to the converted Legacy format. All you need to do is:

Open your Bitcoin cash wallet inside of your Exodus wallet on your desktop or mobile device.

Click/tap to receive and copy your Bitcoin Cash receive address.

Next, visit BTC.com address converter, paste in your Bitcoin Cash q Address in the search bar and hit Address Converter button. The explorer will show you both the Legacy and CashAddr formats.

You will see your address converted to LegacyCashAddr (q address), and BitPay and Copay. Just copy and use the Legacy version of your address.

We highly recommend double-checking the address you have just converted on another block explorer to be 100% sure that the explorer you used has not been compromised. Just enter the converted address on a Bitcoin Cash block explorer.
