How do I import my Bitcoin wallet into Electrum?

Learn how to access your Exodus Bitcoin (BTC) funds using Electrum.

In this article:

What is Electrum?

Electrum is an open-source Bitcoin wallet with many features that allow you to get the most out of your Bitcoin.

Electrum is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android operating systems. You can download installation files as well as the source code from the link below:

If you would like to import your Exodus Bitcoin wallet into Electrum, you will need your Exodus 12-word secret recovery phrase. Before you start, make sure your Exodus wallet is closed.

How do I set up Electrum?

Electrum is a third-party platform that is not affiliated with Exodus. As such, Exodus cannot guarantee the performance of its products/services or that the steps shown and the information provided will always be accurate.

Start Electrum in your system and create a new wallet. Name it something like "exodus_wallet" and click Next.

Select Standard wallet and click Next.

Select I already have a seed and click Next.

Type in your secret recovery phrase from Exodus.

Please be very careful with your 12-word secret recovery phrase and private keys, because they control access to your funds. Never share them with anyone, and only import them into platforms that you trust 100%. If you choose to import your secret recovery phrase or private keys into a third-party platform, you do so at your own risk. Click Options and select BIP39 seed. This will turn on the Next button. Click OK, then the Next button will light up. Before you proceed, make sure the BIP39 Checksum reads "OK" under the text field. This will mean you've entered your secret recovery phrase correctly. If everything checks out, click Next.

Here is where it gets a bit tricky. Exodus uses two types of addresses: Legacy (start with "1") and SegWit bech32 (start with "bc1"). Check this article to see the list of your addresses and balances. If you want to access funds held on your Legacy addresses, select "legacy (p2pkh)" under Script type and Derivation path and click Next.

If you want to access funds held on your SegWit bech32 addresses, select "native segwit (p2wpkh)" under Script type and Derivation path and click Next. If you use both types of addresses, you can create another wallet by going through this guide one more time and selecting the other Script type and Derivation path down the road.

Create a good strong password to encrypt your wallet and click Next.

Electrum will need some time to sync with the network. Once it's done, then it should show a set of transactions and a balance:
