Monero (XMR) troubleshooting
How to fix some common issues with your Monero (XMR) inside of Exodus wallet.
In this article:
What is the wallet creation height?
Monero works a little differently from other coins because of its privacy characteristics. While other assets pull data from the blockchain directly to reflect the balances in the wallet, Monero has to download the data from its blockchain.
By default, Exodus only downloads the most recent Monero block data for new wallets.
What does resetting the wallet creation height do?
When you reset your wallet creation height, you are choosing which block you want to begin downloading data from.
For a new Monero wallet, you don’t need to download old block data because you know you don’t have transaction history that goes back that far. Unless you have an older Monero wallet, downloading old block data is unnecessary.
However, there may be instances where you will need to reset the wallet creation height to help sync your Monero wallet.
You can’t set a block height in your Trezor Monero wallet that is different from the block height in your Exodus Monero wallet.
We suggest resetting your wallet creation height to block 1757335 because that is the earliest block possible to have sent or received an XMR transaction in Exodus. However, this might take a long time, as this is a lot of blocks to download. If you know the block height of your earliest transaction, you can use that block instead.
To find the block on which your first Monero transaction took place, go to your Monero wallet. Then, in your earliest XMR deposit, click on the Transaction ID. Clicking on the Transaction ID in your wallet will take you to a block explorer on your browser. There you can see which block your transaction confirmed on.
Alternatively, if you know the year of your XMR transaction, you can reset your wallet creation height to the following blocks:
Year | Block | Timestamp |
---|---|---|
2023 | 2789763 | January 1 2023, 12:01:43 am UTC |
2022 | 2527316 | January 1 2022, 12:00:17 am UTC |
2021 | 2264584 | January 1 2021, 12:03:43 am UTC |
2020 | 2001315 | January 1 2020, 12:00:56 am UTC |
2019 | 1757335 | January 26 2019, 8:43:51 am UTC |

Older version of Exodus
If you are using an older version of Exodus, you might not be able to send Monero from your wallet.
First update your wallet to the latest version:

After the update, you can reset your wallet creation height.
Waiting to confirm
If you see the below message in your wallet, please don’t worry! XMR requires deposits to be confirmed on the blockchain before your XMR can be sent from Exodus.

If your deposit is still pending on the network and flagged as such in Exodus, this means you will need to wait until the transaction is confirmed before those XMR tokens are included in your available balance. Typically, this should not take more than 20 minutes. However, during periods of high network traffic, it may take longer.
Monero wallets require at least 10 confirmations of any transaction before being able to send or exchange.
You can always check your pending transaction on the blockchain. To do this, click on the Pending transaction in Exodus and then click the transaction ID. This will open a new tab in your browser where you can see the current network status of your transaction.
Refreshing your Monero wallet
Mobile
The first step here would be to ensure that your Monero wallet is caught up with the blockchain. Here’s how you can check the sync progress for Monero on your mobile wallet:
Go to your Monero wallet and tap the Settings icon at the top right-hand corner.

That will bring you to a screen like this:

Pay attention to the “Sync Progress” bar. It needs to be fully synchronized (100%) for your balance to display in the wallet.
In order to allow Monero to complete its synchronizing process, you’ll need to keep the app open, your Mobile phone powered on, and connected to a robust Internet connection.
If the sync progress has been completed and you are still not able to see your funds, we can proceed to the next step for troubleshooting XMR by resetting the wallet creation height as explained here.
Desktop
If you think your wallet may be out of sync with the network, the first thing to do is refresh your wallet.
During the refresh, sending funds is disabled. This means you will not be able to send your Monero or exchange your Monero while your wallet is refreshing. Your Monero wallet will need to fully sync with the network before sending is activated. So if you see this message:

Or this one:

This is completely normal. All you will have to do is wait for the sync to complete. You can check the progress of the sync by a) clicking the three dots in the top right corner and b) opening the Advanced Options:
Once the sync has completed, you can send and exchange your Monero once again!
